Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!
Today we talk about something called information overload.
Information overload is a situation where the information available is too much or too complex to be processed.
A new study by Dr Martin Hilbert at the
University of Southern California calculated the amount of data stored
on 25 different technologies.
Those technologies include computers, DVD’s, CD’s and books.
They estimate that the amount of information stored in the world – in 2007 was equivalent to 1.2 billion average hard drives.
Dr Hilbert told the BBC that the amount of
information is so large that if it was stored in books, the books would
cover the area of the US or China three times!
He gave another example using CD's.
He said that if we put all of the
information onto CD’s and stacked the CD’s on top of each other, the
CD’s would reach the moon!
The study also showed the huge digital divide between rich and poor countries despite the spread of computers and mobile phones.
